What Role Does IT Play in an Organization?

The more I think about this, the more I think they’re right, at least to an extent. CompTIA recently surveyed IT pros about the data roles they play in today’s modern environments.
Almost half of the respondents indicated that IT pros play a strategic role. In many organizations, IT plays a much more strategic, vital role than just sourcing and protecting servers.

The phrase strategic IT is often used to show how IT workers are being brought in at the highest levels to make sure that data is properly created, transferred and stored. More importantly, they’re brought into discussions with data analysts, marketing professionals and researchers. In other words, IT workers are shaping how data is used in an organization.

But that’s not all – IT pros are also shaping how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used. CompTIA’s recent Emerging Technology Community shows that for the first time, AI is the most important technology for IT pros to know. This is followed by 5G and the internet of things (IoT) (the former #1).

CompTIA Security+ Salary Perspective

As an entry-level credential, Security+ is frequently one of the first certifications obtained by aspiring IT security professionals. It validates that a candidate possesses the knowledge and skills to fulfil a variety of junior and entry-level security related roles, such as penetration tester, junior IT auditor, and systems, network or security administrator. Security+ skills are also used by security specialists, engineers and security consultants.

The BLS report also indicates that the top five paying industries for IT security professionals are (1) Wholesale Electronic Markets and Agents and Brokers; (2) Securities, Commodity Contracts, and Other Financial Investments and Related Activities; (3) Scientific Research and Development Services; (4) Utility System Construction; and (5) Legal Services. Please refer to the May 2017 BLS Occupational Employment and Wages to learn more about security job opportunities and salaries in your location and industry.

To provide typical salaries for some of the various Security+ job roles, I conducted a salary search on SimplyHired (a popular job board). As noted above, many factors influence an individual’s salary, but the table below provides an example of what wages different security-related roles command.

Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) vs. Security+ Certification

The Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) certification from (ISC)2 is a globally recognized security certification that targets IT professionals in roles such as network security engineer, system administrator, system engineer, security analyst, consultant, database administrator, and system or network analyst. SSCPs possess advanced security administration and operations skills. Successful candidates work in hands-on security roles and recommend and implement cybersecurity best practices, procedures and policies, as well as administer, monitor and implement secure IT infrastructures.

To earn the credential, candidates must pass the SSCP exam and have at least one year of full-time paid experience in one or more of the seven SSCP domains (Access Controls, Security Operations and Administration, Risk Identification, Monitoring and Analysis, Incident Response and Recovery, Cryptography, Network and Communications Security, and Systems and Application Security). The credential is valid for three years; 60 continuing professional education (CPE) credits and an annual maintenance fee of $65 are required to maintain the certification.

While the Security+ and SSCP are both excellent credentials, they are geared to different audiences. Security+ targets entry-level security practitioners who often work in roles such as information security analyst. The SSCP, on the other hand, is geared to IT professionals with more advanced skills in security operations and administration.

Learning about social engineering attacks

Any system operated by humans is remains vulnerable to social engineering attacks. Therefore, in addition to enhancing your technical knowledge in cybersecurity, it’s important to learn how to develop procedures to block social engineering attacks, such as requiring verification before providing information to third parties. Options for enhancing your knowledge in this area include taking a course or reading materials written by social engineers
Exploring adjacent fields

To become truly proficient in cybersecurity topics, it’s worth looking deeper into related fields. For instance, you can dive into a particular operating system or virtual environment, learning its file structure and permissions methodologies to understand its vulnerabilities. In addition, it’s worth dedicating some time to learn the OSI model, which divides network communication into seven layers, so you can ensure that security matters that lie above or below the level where you operate are covered.

Will the SSCP certification get me a job?

Some jobs require candidates to take one or more tests. Some tests are strictly technical asking you multiple-choice technical questions. You aren’t expected to ace them, but they often give the hiring managers an idea of your technical knowledge.

Other tests are deeper. Organizations sometimes use psychological tests to gauge how someone might interact with customers or how they might respond in a highly stressful environment. Again, perfect answers aren’t expected, but they do give the hiring managers some insight.

One test that will surely eliminate you is a drug test. Many companies require you to submit to drug testing to see if you are a drug user.

It’s common for an organization to do a background check on a potential employee at just about any point in the hiring process. A background check typically includes legal and financial checks.

information technology (IT) risks

t’s important to realize that you can’t eliminate risk. Sure, you can avoid information technology (IT) risks completely by unplugging your computer and burying it. However, that wouldn’t be very useful. Instead, users and organizations practice risk management to reduce the risks.
You probably practice risk management every day. Driving or walking down roads and streets can be a very dangerous activity. Car-sized bullets are speeding back and forth, representing significant risks to anyone else on the road. However, you mitigate these risks with caution and vigilance. The same occurs with computers and networks. An organization mitigates risks using different types of security controls.
One of the best ways you can identify a good study guide is by the reviews of others. The CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-501 Study Guide. This is an update to the  CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-401 Study Guide, which has 933 customer reviews and about 700 of them are five star reviews.
The CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-501 Study Guide hasn’t been out as long so it doesn’t have as many reviews yet, but it has all of the same elements that made the 401 study guide so popular.

What are the most significant changes on the comptia a+ exam

While there are many detailed changes, perhaps the most significant is an increased requirement for hands on troubleshooting skills. Interface Technical Training has always offered, in fact insisted, on substantial hands on opportunity during our course delivery. This trend will continue and grow, since the SY0-501 exam is supposed to contain substantially more validation of hands on skills. This implies more performance based questions on the exam, although CompTIA has not provided information regarding any new exam layout. Indications suggest a similar base of 90 multiple choice questions, with several multiple choice questions being swapped out for each performance based question that the candidate encounters on the exam. Although enforcement may be difficult, CompTIA suggests that hands on labs should be robust and mandatory given the new exam requirements. I consider this an indication that practical application of skills will be more important that rote knowledge or memorization for the new exam version.

CompTIA suggests that 25% of the exam content has changed and that the content is both broader and more in depth. Credential changes are typically based on the Job Tasks Analysis Survey that CompTIA regularly conducts with CompTIA members and partner organizations. Current results suggest far less analysis and far more immediate issue resolution on the Security+ exam. This may be in part due to the new Cyber Security Analysis (CSA+) credential being introduced by CompTIA. CSA+ is now considered the intermediate security credential, while Security+ is being defined more as a skilled, entry level credential.

Management Skills Needed IT Networks

This is probably my most compelling reason for taking a test remotely … we have more control over our pre-exam routine. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I played Call of Duty, one of my favorite video games, just moments before my exam. Doing this removed nearly all the anxiety and stress I had going into this exam and put me in the best state of mind.

For you, (and also for me), this process might involve making a cup of coffee, going for a run or just reviewing your notes. Taking the exam remotely gives you more control of your mental state going into the exam.
4. Testing Where You Studied

During the exam, I almost forgot I was taking an IT certification exam. That was the fun part for me. I had spent time studying for CompTIA Linux+, using tools like CompTIA CertMaster, in the same environment where I took my exam. The effect was that it often just felt like another study session, which relieved the pressure a bit and allowed me to think more clearly.

How has COVID-19 impacted ecosystems?

Our ecosystem has seen digital transformation initiative timelines accelerate from years down to months. Period. Businesses are closed so people are communicating, working and shopping online at unprecedented levels. This is digital transformation. Our customers need the tools to secure their data and optimize their networks to ensure a high-quality user experience.

In the coming weeks, CompTIA’s State, Local and Education (SLED) Committee and the Human Services IT Advisory Group (HSITAG) will explore the need to address both the immediate and long-term challenges of moving to remote work.

The pandemic has thrown a massive spotlight on the need for state and local systems to modernize. The most apparent has been the overly taxed Unemployment Insurance systems across the country. Many states have been forced to respond quickly with varying degrees of success. While the focus has largely been on Unemployment Insurance systems, there will be secondary and tertiary impacts because of increased demand placed on downstream services such as re-employment services, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefit systems. Similarly, there will be downstream effects to moving state and local employees who support these critical services to remote work.

How Is the New CompTIA Cloud+ Different?

While still covering the foundational aspects of cloud technology emphasized in CompTIA Cloud+ (CV0-002), the refreshed offering expands in two important areas – security and high-availability.

The new CompTIA Cloud+ covers in greater depth the skills and abilities needed to secure the cloud, validating that candidates have the hands-on experience needed to secure environments regardless of the vendor solution.

In addition to validating the technical security skills cloud engineers need, the exam continues to highlight the importance of compliance requirements – a key function in today’s ever-changing regulatory world.

The refreshed CompTIA Cloud+ (CV0-003) also includes an entire objective dedicated to high-availability – the goal of ensuring around-the-clock access to all your data and software as a service (SaaS) applications. This highlights the move toward cloud-hosted solutions throughout enterprise and small-business.

Creating IT Futures, CompTIA’s tech

In this case, our outcome was to help transitioning service members get into homeownership as soon as possible. That was the goal. It was getting a good enough job that you can buy a new home. That's not a skill's or just a job's goal, for us, it's a life goal, a sustainable wage, a long-term career. The long-term success of that individual is the goal.

Homeownership, that's big. Okay, well, let's work back from that. We have this population coming out of Fort Bliss that has [certain] fundamental skills. Where can we build from that? And by the way, we have this huge demand in the IT sector for cybersecurity. Do any of those things match? Yes. We have a lot of individuals that are in the IT field, have experience and background in IT. But, also, in security and in protection, military presence, military intelligence…

…Let's marry them together, and let's develop this course… that was done in 12 weeks. And that 12 weeks wasn't just some random number. It came from the leadership on the post that said 12 weeks is our threshold. We really can't do anything longer than 12 weeks. That's the maximum amount of time that we can let these individuals go to training. But they gave us that maximum amount because their goal is immediate employment [too] into a sustainable career.
